Chicago Fed index rises - 5/22/2017 2:43 PM
The gauge of US economic activity from the Chicago Fed rose to its highest mark since 2014, with gains in two of the four indicators rising in April compared to March. The reading was at 0.49 in April, the highest since 0.50 in November 2014 and sharply higher than the 0.07 mark from March. "Two of the four broad categories of indicators that make up the index increased from March, and only one category made a negative contribution to the index in April," the Chicago Fed said in a statement.
Traders expect smaller beef, larger pork stocks vs month-ago: Reuters - 5/22/2017 1:24 PM
Traders expect April 30 total frozen beef stocks to be 444.4 million pounds and pork stocks at 586.4 million pounds in the Cold Storage report from USDA, according to a poll of traders released by Reuters. That compares to March 31 supplies of 464 million pounds for beef and 555 million pounds for pork. The expectation for higher pork stocks may be somewhat surprising given market views that demand has remained strong on both the domestic and export front.

Spring wheat planting reached 78 percent finished while 51 percent of winter wheat was rated good/excellent as of May 14.
WTO authorizes Mexican retaliation against US in tuna dispute - 5/22/2017 12:27 PM
Mexico has been given authorization by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to retaliate on $163 million of US exports in a long-running dispute over the US "dolphin-safe" tuna labeling program in the wake of their ruling that the US program unfairly discriminates against tuna caught by the Mexican fishing industry. Mexico asked for permission to retaliate on $472 million of US exports. However, a WTO arbitrator set the amount at $163 million in late April, estimating that as the amount of damage done annually to Mexican tuna exports by the discriminatory nature of the dolphin-safe label program. Meanwhile, the US says changes it made to the tuna labeling program last year brought it into compliance with WTO rules, with a separate WTO panel expected to rule on that by mid-July. A ruling in favor of the US would require Mexico to terminate any retaliation. However, Mexico could also appeal the compliance decision to try to keep the duties in place.
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani wins reelection - 5/22/2017 8:59 AM
Iranian voters gave the president a second four-year term, rejecting his hard-line challenger, Ebrahim Raisi, and endorsing a leader who seeks better ties to the West. Rouhani has pledged to pursue talks with the US to lift further sanctions, and push for greater freedoms in Iran. But he will also face a more confrontational Trump administration, which has put the nuclear deal under review. In his first term, he negotiated the 2015 nuclear deal to curb Iran's nuclear program and recently pledged to get the remaining sanctions lifted against the Islamic Republic.
North Korea conducts another missile test - 5/22/2017 8:53 AM
North Korea fired another midrange ballistic missile that flew eastward 310 miles from an area near its capital, Pyongyang, according to South Korea's military. The White House said the system has shorter range than missiles in North Korea's three recent tests. With its second successful missile launch in a little more than a week, Pyongyang is ramping up the pace of its testing as it seeks to develop the ability to target the continental US with a nuclear-tipped weapon. "Many more 'Juche weapons' capable of striking the US will be launched from this land," North Korea's Minju Joson newspaper said in a commentary Sunday, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
The results from Iran’s presidential election are expected to emerge over the weekend - 5/19/2017 9:46 AM
Incumbent Hassan Rouhani is seeking a second term against conservative challenger Ebrahim Raisi, a cleric who emerged only recently as a serious contender and is close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The vote is seen as a referendum on Rouhani's policy of engaging with the West, and is the first since the 2015 nuclear deal was signed.

Court pauses suit over EPA methane limits for new oil and gas sources - 5/18/2017 12:53 PM
The DC Circuit Court of Appeals today granted an indefinite pause in the lawsuits challenging EPA's methane emissions rule for future oil and gas sources. EPA issued the rules last year in an update to 2012 regulations aimed at methane and other pollutants from newly built oil and gas industry facilities. The agency last month asked for the case to be paused while it reviews the regulation. EPA last month said it will reconsider key portions of the rule. The court today instructed EPA to file status updates regarding its regulatory review every 60 days.
GOP senator: Flynn will not comply with committee’s subpoena, but then senator walked back statement - 5/18/2017 1:23 PM
Lawyers for former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn say he will not comply with a subpoena issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee, Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said Thursday. The rebuffed demand was for documents related to the committee’s investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election. However, Burr has walked back his statement that Flynn refuses to cooperate: "General Flynn's attorneys have not yet indicated their intentions regarding...the subpoena."
